Situated in Holmer Green, the property was a modest three-bedroom bungalow positioned on a generous plot. Although the site offered significant potential, the house itself required comprehensive modernisation. The layout was single-storey, with limited space and no option for extra accommodation in the roof. While functional, the property did not fully capitalise on the plot’s size or its relationship with the garden.
The client’s brief was to extend and remodel the bungalow to create a larger, contemporary family home. A key ambition was to increase the number of bedrooms while enhancing the quality of ground-floor living space. Accessibility was central to the design, as the client used a wheelchair. The home needed to provide step-free, level thresholds throughout, wide doorways and accessible circulation routes, generous, adaptable living spaces, a strong visual and physical connection to the garden, and a modern architectural identity. Planning permission was successfully secured to extend the rear of the property and raise the roof to create additional habitable rooms within the loft space.
The bungalow was comprehensively reimagined and extended both horizontally and vertically, transforming it into a spacious five-bedroom home. Raising the roof enabled substantial new accommodation on the first floor, significantly increasing the house’s overall capacity. At ground floor, the layout was reconfigured to prioritise a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and family area. Large sliding doors were introduced to create seamless access to the garden, enhancing indoor–outdoor living and allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the interior. Accessibility informed every design decision. Level thresholds, wide doorways, and carefully planned circulation routes ensure full mobility throughout the home without compromising aesthetics. Externally, a contemporary façade with clean render finishes refreshed the building’s identity. Internally, a double-height entrance hall and vaulted ceilings maximise daylight and create a sense of openness, while framing uninterrupted views of the garden.
The completed project delivers a modern, light-filled, and fully accessible five-bedroom family home. The design successfully combines elegance, functionality, and inclusivity, ensuring that the property not only meets the client’s mobility needs but also provides flexible, future-proofed living spaces. What was once a modest bungalow is now a spacious and contemporary home that fully realises the potential of its generous plot while strengthening its connection to the surrounding garden.
