AG Architecture Studio had the privilege of assisting the Architect Bob Berry on the planning and building regulation drawings for the extension of Chilterns Residential Home in Bourne End. This important project involved expanding the existing facility to better serve the needs of its residents, while respecting the architectural heritage of the building.

The extension includes 42 new bedrooms, each equipped with ensuites and featuring Juliet balconies, offering residents both privacy and a connection to the surrounding environment. In addition, the scheme incorporated essential facilities such as a modern kitchen, dedicated laundry services, a spacious dining room, and a community hall, all designed to enhance the living experience within the home.

Given that the building is an Art and Craft style structure with a local heritage listing, a key challenge was to ensure that the extension remained sympathetic to its historical significance. The design needed to meet modern standards for care while preserving the building’s unique character.

Although the initial planning application was refused by the local council, the scheme was successfully approved on appeal, a testament to the thoughtful and detailed work put into the design and regulatory compliance. Throughout this process, I worked closely with Bob Berry to create a balanced design that respected the building’s heritage while meeting the current needs of the residents.

This project not only expands the capacity of the residential home but also ensures that it continues to provide a high-quality, supportive environment for its community.
