Original House

The original property occupied a desirable residential plot in Beaconsfield. While well located, the existing dwelling no longer met the client’s aspirations in terms of scale, layout, or architectural quality.

The house lacked spatial cohesion, modern functionality, and the architectural presence appropriate for its setting. It became clear that a comprehensive redevelopment would provide an opportunity to create a home better suited to modern family living while enhancing the site’s character.

The Brief

We were commissioned to design a replacement dwelling by demolishing the existing house to enable the construction of a new, purpose-designed family residence.

The proposal comprised a contemporary yet contextually sensitive home with a total internal gross area of approximately 445 sqm, arranged across the basement, ground, and first floors.

The basement level was designed to accommodate a spacious games room alongside a dedicated storage area. On the ground floor, the layout included an entrance hallway leading to a formal living room, a study, a cloakroom and W.C., and a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space. This principal living area was complemented by an orangery with a rooflight to enhance natural daylight within the dining room. Additional practical spaces included a utility room, boot room, and an integrated double garage.

The first floor was arranged around a central landing and provided four well-proportioned bedrooms, each with its own ensuite.

The design needed to deliver contemporary living accommodation while remaining sympathetic to the established architectural character of the area and ensuring that no additional overlooking of neighbouring properties would occur.

The Transformation

The new dwelling adopts a contemporary architectural language, expressed through a balanced, symmetrical composition. Twin gables to both the front and rear elevations establish a strong yet elegant form, reflecting the prevailing character of surrounding properties.

Facing brickwork, enriched with carefully considered brick detailing, articulates the façades and introduces depth and refinement. The architectural detailing provides visual interest while maintaining harmony with the streetscape.

Internally, the home is centred around a generous open-plan kitchen and dining area that forms the heart of the house. The orangery extension, complete with a rooflight, draws natural light deep into the plan and strengthens the connection between internal living spaces and the garden.

The basement discreetly accommodates the games room and storage, maximising functional space without increasing the perceived scale of the building. Throughout the design process, careful attention was given to privacy and site relationships to ensure the development caused no additional overlooking.

The Outcome

The completed replacement dwelling delivers a substantial yet well-proportioned family home that responds sensitively to its prestigious Beaconsfield setting.

The symmetrical gabled form, high-quality facing brickwork, and refined detailing create a residence that feels both distinctive and contextually appropriate. Internally, the house offers expansive, light-filled living spaces, four ensuite bedrooms, and a versatile lower-ground leisure area, successfully combining architectural presence with everyday practicality.

The result is a thoughtfully designed contemporary home that enhances both the site and its surroundings while meeting the client’s aspirations for quality, space, and longevity.
