The property is a detached family home located within the Green Belt and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Surrounded by expansive gardens and far-reaching countryside views, the setting was both a privilege and a planning sensitivity.
While the house occupied a remarkable plot, the existing layout did not fully capitalise on its relationship with the landscape. Opportunities to frame views, introduce greater natural light, and create stronger connections to the garden were limited.
Our brief was twofold.
Firstly, to design a substantial rear conservatory that would maximise views of the stunning garden and surrounding landscape — creating a light-filled space for relaxation and entertaining throughout the year.
Secondly, to introduce a side extension that would accommodate a ground-floor gymnasium and a first-floor study. The new study was designed to take advantage of a private balcony, carefully positioned to overlook the spectacular views while respecting the site’s sensitivity.
Given the Green Belt and AONB designation, the design required careful consideration to ensure it remained sympathetic, proportionate, and appropriate to its setting.
The rear conservatory was designed as a generous yet elegant addition, with expansive glazing that dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior. The structure enhances the connection to the garden while maintaining a refined architectural presence.
The side extension was carefully integrated into the house’s existing form. At the first-floor level, the study opens onto a balcony that frames panoramic views of the landscape, creating a tranquil workspace immersed in nature.
Materiality played a crucial role in ensuring the extensions blended seamlessly with their surroundings. A combination of timber boarding and facing brickwork was used to articulate the façades, introducing texture and variation while complementing the character of the original dwelling and the wider rural context.
The completed project enhances both the functionality and architectural character of the home.
The new conservatory has become a focal point of the living space, filled with natural light and fully connected to the garden. The gym and study provide valuable additional accommodation tailored to the client’s lifestyle, while the balcony offers a private vantage point over the exceptional landscape.
Despite its contemporary intervention, the design remains respectful of its Green Belt and AONB setting — achieving a balance between sensitive planning compliance and bold, lifestyle-driven architecture.
