Original Property

This traditional terraced house is located in the charming village of Wooburn Green, near Beaconsfield, within a quiet residential setting. Full of character, the property nonetheless suffered from a constrained, poorly lit internal layout that limited both functionality and the overall sense of space. The staircase was positioned within the living room, interrupting the natural flow of the ground floor and restricting layout flexibility. Cellular rooms and dividing walls created a series of disconnected spaces, while limited glazing to the rear left the house feeling dark and enclosed, particularly at ground level. Upstairs, the layout lacked efficiency, offering limited storage and no en-suite facilities, reducing both comfort and long-term adaptability for modern family living.

The Brief

The client sought to reimagine the house as a bright, open, and sociable family home better suited to contemporary living. Key objectives included improving natural light throughout the ground floor, creating a generous open-plan kitchen and dining area, and strengthening the connection to the garden. The brief also called for enhancing circulation and spatial flow, introducing a master bedroom with en-suite and integrated storage, and increasing overall functionality and long-term value. The ambition was not simply to extend, but to unlock the home’s hidden potential through thoughtful spatial reconfiguration.

The Transformation

A pivotal move was relocating the staircase, freeing the living room from its previous constraint and unlocking the internal plan. Removing the dividing wall between the kitchen and living areas created a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space, dramatically improving circulation and usability. To the rear, a carefully considered extension projects into the garden, forming a new living area that acts as the sociable heart of the home. Large sliding folding doors were introduced across the rear elevation, maximising daylight and strengthening the indoor–outdoor relationship. Rooflights positioned within the new flat roof draw natural light deep into the plan, transforming what was once a dark, compartmentalised house into a bright, uplifting interior. Upstairs, the layout was reconfigured to improve comfort and practicality. The master bedroom was relocated to the front of the property, creating space for a new en-suite bathroom and bespoke integrated storage, enhancing both daily living and overall property value.

The Outcome

The result is a calm, light-filled family home that feels dramatically larger and more connected than before. Previously underperforming and disconnected spaces have been reshaped into a cohesive, contemporary living environment tailored to modern family life. Through considered architectural intervention rather than excessive expansion, the home now performs better spatially, visually, and functionally — demonstrating how thoughtful design can unlock hidden potential and create lasting value.
